Flood protection - personal precautions pay off

Despite public protection measures, there is still a flood risk in residential areas. Public precautions are no substitute for personal responsibility. Everyone affected should take action themselves to avoid or minimize damage.

Despite public flood protection, there is still a potential risk from flooding in residential areas. Public prevention cannot replace personal responsibility. Every resident potentially affected by flooding should therefore take action themselves to prevent or minimize damage to their property.

Where can I find out whether my property is at risk of flooding?

The flood hazard maps of the Hessian State Office for the Environment and Geology show whether a property is located in a flood zone. The Lower Water Authority can also provide information on this.

What can I do structurally if my property is at risk of flooding?

There are numerous ways to protect your building:

  • Property protection on houses is primarily aimed at potential entry points such as windows, doors and gates. Suitable options here include dam planks and boards that are inserted into permanently installed U-profiles at building openings.
  • It also makes sense to use flood-resistant building materials, such as special plaster coatings.
  • Sewage pipes should be fitted with backflow protection.

This can prevent a large number of cellar floods. Depending on the terrain, terrain swales or ground sills in the outdoor area can help to prevent water from flowing into the building.

Emergency bag

In the event of flooding, everyone affected must be prepared themselves: basic equipment for quick action should be ready in a prepared transportation box before the flood. It should contain, for example, rubber boots, gloves, tools, emergency rations, flashlight, first-aid kit and important papers.

Risk provisioning

Numerous insurance policies offer financial provision in the event of flood damage.
