Information on organ donation
The law introducing the decision solution has been in force since November 1, 2012. All citizens from the age of 16 are regularly asked to address the issue.
For around two decades, organ transplants have been standard treatment for serious illnesses that are associated with permanent organ failure. However, many patients die every year who could possibly have been saved if a donor organ had been available in time. In Germany, around 12,000 people are waiting for such an organ.
The law introducing the decision solution has been in force since November 1, 2012. From the age of 16, all citizens are regularly asked to consider the topic of organ and tissue donation and to make a decision on whether they are willing to donate their own organs. Current figures show just how important this is: 98% of German citizens would like to benefit from an organ transplant if they were to fall ill, but only around 16% are willing to donate and carry a donor card with them.
Those who decide for or against organ donation save their relatives from having to make a decision in the event of an emergency. The organ donor card is intended to document this in writing and should always be carried along with personal identification documents, as this is the first place to look in an accident situation so that relatives can be informed. However, the card can also be left with relatives or an unrelated person of trust. The organ donor card is not registered or deposited with any official body. Anyone who changes their mind and no longer wishes to be a donor only needs to destroy the card.
Comprehensive information is provided by the Federal Center for Health Education. On its website, it provides information on the new legal situation, on all aspects of organ removal, procurement and transplantation as well as on the legal framework. In addition, a free information hotline is available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 0800 9040400.
The current discussions about the allocation of donor organs and the unfortunate discoveries do not change the fact that everyone must first make their own decision, because organ donation saves lives, perhaps even one's own.
