Single parent - All about pregnancy and maternity protection
Pregnancy brings with it many questions and changes. Here you will find advice, support and important information on maternity protection, financial assistance and services relating to birth and the first time with a child.
If you are expecting a child, you are particularly entitled to advice, support and protection, for example as an employee. In this section you will find information on advice, support and assistance during pregnancy, the birth and the early days with the child. You can also find information on health protection (maternity protection) and material assistance on this page.
Pregnancy and pregnancy conflict counseling
For all questions, crises and conflicts relating to pregnancy, birth, partnership or health as well as family planning, you can turn to Wiesbaden's pregnancy advice centers. The counseling centers pro familia, Regionale Diakonie and Donum Vitae also offer advice on abortion. The counseling certificate required by law is issued there. Early counseling in the event of a pregnancy conflict is particularly important, as an abortion must be carried out by the end of the 12th week of pregnancy. All consultations are free of charge and confidential!
You can find advice and information at the following facilities:
Birth preparation (preventive service provided by statutory health insurance)
If you are insured or co-insured with (statutory) health insurance during your pregnancy, you are entitled to all necessary medical services such as check-ups, inpatient delivery or necessary remedies as well as the help and care of a midwife. Women without health insurance can make use of these services via the "Humanitarian Consultation Hour" (see below). Birth preparation courses, which are offered to women and couples by various institutions, are also very helpful and important. You can find birth preparation courses at the Paulinen Klinik, Dr. Horst-Schmidt-Kliniken and St. Josefs-Hospital maternity clinics (see also Birth information).
Midwifery assistance
Before, during and after a birth - usually up to ten days after the delivery - you can take advantage of the support of a midwife to accompany the expectant mother in all matters relating to delivery, check-ups and breastfeeding, regardless of whether a child is born in hospital or at home. The costs are covered by the respective health insurance company. As it has become increasingly difficult to find a midwife for these services in Wiesbaden in recent years, helpful portals, service and advice centers have now been set up for this purpose. Birth
You can find clinics and contact persons for the upcoming delivery as well as midwives here:
Humanitarian consultation hour
The humanitarian consultation hour offers pregnant women without health insurance - anonymously if desired - free advice, all necessary examinations and care by midwives and specialists before and after the birth. They also receive support with health insurance applications and can give birth free of charge in one of Wiesbaden's clinics. For further information, please contact the pro familia advice center directly.
Maternity protection
As a pregnant employee, you enjoy special health protection. The Maternity Protection Act regulates the rights and obligations of employees and employers during pregnancy (six weeks before the birth and eight weeks after the expected date of birth). Important areas of labor law include, for example, protection against dismissal, occupational health and safety regulations, the payment of maternity benefits during the maternity protection period and preventive care benefits. This law applies to all types of employment (full-time or part-time, full-time, part-time, marginal, probationary, temporary or working from home). There are similar protective regulations for female civil servants. You can find more information here:
Maternity benefit
As a pregnant woman, regardless of your nationality, you are entitled to so-called "maternity benefit", which is paid free of tax and social security contributions and generally free of contributions to statutory pension, health and long-term care insurance. For employees, this is paid by the statutory health insurance fund and the difference to the net income is paid by the employer. There are different regulations regarding this entitlement for self-employed women with statutory health insurance (maternity benefit in the amount of sick pay), self-employed women with private health insurance (individual regulations of the health insurance funds), family-insured women (one-off payment) and privately insured women (employer subsidy) as well as civil servants. For unemployed women with statutory insurance (unemployment benefit I, maintenance allowance), maternity benefit is paid via the health insurance fund. Unemployed women who receive citizen's allowance are not entitled to maternity benefit, but continue to receive citizen's allowance.
Advice and help with the application process can be obtained from the aforementioned advice centers (pro familia Wiesbaden, Regionale Diakonie Wiesbaden Rheingau-Taunus, Donum Vitae and Sozialdienstkatholischer Frauen e. V.).

Assistance and material aid
In some cases, such as unresolved paternity, you can request the support of the youth welfare office as part of a guardianship. The responsible social services department represents the child together with the parent entitled to file an application in establishing paternity and asserting maintenance claims. The Wiesbaden Office for Social Work - Social Services is responsible for this.
Material assistance for pregnant women
The Federal Foundation "Mother and Child" supports pregnant women with a low income with a one-off benefit - for example for maternity clothes, baby clothes or equipment for the child. For advice and to apply for this assistance, please contact the advice centers mentioned above. Recipients of citizen's allowance (SGB II) or social assistance (SGB XII) are entitled to "pregnancy-related additional needs" from the 13th week of pregnancy as well as a one-off allowance for the necessary initial equipment (baby clothes, bed, etc.). Applications can only be submitted via your local social work office or social benefits and job center.
