Given Kastel's long settlement history, an adequate burial tradition in our oldest suburb is only to be expected. The predecessor of today's cemetery has been located around St. George's Church on Rochusplatz since the 16th century. Even a section of the plague wall, which was once used to isolate the sick from the healthy, has been preserved. By the end of the 18th century, however, the cemetery had already been moved to Boelckestrasse.

Around half of today's cemetery area is a listed building. These are three sections located to the south and southwest of the mourning hall and the so-called field of honor. In these areas, special regulations apply to the design of new graves and the existing gravesites may only be redesigned or reconfigured with the approval of a listed building.

This also includes historical gravestones of high artistic-historical rank, the preservation of which is costly and for which sponsorships are sought. As an exception, burials at Kastel cemetery take place exclusively in underground graves. The deep graves, just like the resting period of 20 years, date back to the time when the 'Casselers' (the inhabitants of Kastel) were still oriented towards Mainz.

The following types of grave are possible at Kastel cemetery:

- Burial in the ground

- Burial grave (deep grave)

- Burial plot for children

- Burial in a row

- Burial plot for children

- Urn ballot grave

- Urn chamber/urn wall

- Urn grave
