Burials
There are basically two forms of burial on offer in Wiesbaden: burial in the ground and urn burial.
In the case of burial, the body is buried in the ground. The cemeteries offer various types of burial plots for this purpose. Burial in the ground does not mean that urns cannot also be buried here.
The burial plot
An elective grave is a type of grave that can be used both as an individual grave and as a family grave.
Burial plots are individual grave sites that can be freely selected by the citizen depending on availability. One burial (one coffin) and the burial of up to eight urns can take place per grave site. The right of use of these gravesites must be extended as required (in the case of burials) or can be extended after the rights of use have expired. This is particularly important in cases where graves are to be used as family graves.
If a grave is purchased during a person's lifetime, this is for a maximum period of 20 years.

Burial plot for children
Graves for stillborn and deceased children from 0 to 5 years of age
Burial plots for children are grave sites that can be freely selected by the public, depending on availability. Grieving parents should also be able to retain the gravesites of their children who died in infancy or early childhood beyond the 15-year period. These gravesites are initially adapted to the resting period of a child's coffin and must be purchased with a right of use for 15 years.
After expiry, the right of use can be extended again and again. Therefore, up to 8 urns can be buried in this grave at any time. Once the resting period of the child's coffin has expired, the same grave can also be used for the burial of an adult, making it suitable as a family grave.

Burial in the ground (elective grave)
An earthen grave is a type of grave that can be used both as an individual grave and as a family grave, i.e. for the burial of one or more deceased persons. Burial mounds are individual gravesites that can be freely selected by the citizen depending on availability in predetermined areas.
These gravesites have different (oversized) sizes in an exclusive location and are surrounded by planting. The number of graves or urns that can be placed there depends on the size of the grave. The price is also based on the area of the grave and is calculated per square meter.

Earth grave (deep grave)
Deep graves are a special type of burial ground at the cemeteries in Kastel and Kostheim. As with all other types of burial ground, they can be used both as individual graves and as family graves. The special feature of these gravesites is that two coffins can be buried in the pit, one above the other, and up to eight urns per grave. The first burial takes place at a depth of around 2.40 meters, with an optional second burial taking place later above the first coffin. For the first burial, a surcharge is levied for the deeper burial.

Crypt
Burial vaults are architectural tombs that can be freely selected by the public depending on availability in the cemeteries. They are actually burial sites with an underground vault. In contrast to an earth grave, the grave is not opened from above, but from the path. This means that a depression the size of a grave is excavated in front of the actual burial site.
Only then is the entrance to the vault opened so that the coffin can be placed in the vault. The entrance to the vault is then filled with slabs or bricks, depending on the nature of the grave. This means that the gravestone and planting are preserved and do not have to be removed. Single or multi-layered crypts can be purchased. The main difference between burial in a crypt and burial in the ground is that the coffin is not placed directly in the ground, but in a specially designated space. Two coffins on top of each other and up to eight urns can be placed in each crypt.

Graves in rows
Burial rows for deceased persons aged 5 and over
Inhumation graves are purely individual graves and - as the name suggests - are allocated by the cemetery administration 'in sequence'. Relatives cannot influence the location. Use over several generations is also not possible, as they are not extended after the resting period has expired. The right of use is 30 years and is aligned with the resting period of a burial. As the resting period of an urn is 20 years, burials of up to six urns are also possible in the first 10 years.
Exceptions to this are the Kastel and Kostheim cemeteries, where the right of use is only valid for 20 years, as the resting periods for burials are set at 20 years. The burial of urns is only possible here at the same time as an earth burial, as the right of use would be exceeded in the event of a later burial.
