Pheasantry Wiesbaden
European hamster (cricetus cricetus)
The field hamster collects supplies in its large cheek pouches and is a master of digging. In the pheasantry you can observe this rare rodent and learn more about its protection.
The field hamster is a real survival artist and is known for its bulging cheek pouches. It lives in burrows it digs itself and collects supplies for the winter. Its dense, colorfully patterned fur with a black belly makes it unmistakable. Unfortunately, the European hamster is highly endangered in Germany because its habitats are becoming ever smaller. Conservation programs are helping to save them from extinction.
