Insect nature trail

"Bumblebees help! Rhine-Main"

The insect nature trail in the Fasanerie is a cooperation with the AG Didaktik der Biologie of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in their project "Hummeln helfen! Rhine-Main".

The project was started in January 2021 in the AG Didaktik der Biologie at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz at schools in the Rhine-Main area and is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) as part of the Federal Biodiversity Program. In the current school year, more than 700 pupils are taking part in 29 learning groups at 13 project schools, including several schools in Wiesbaden.

Pupils from secondary schools are involved in the project to promote the interests of bumblebees and wild bee species. The focus here is on curriculum-relevant content. As part of a monitoring project, they examine their own school grounds or the bumblebee meadow at the extracurricular learning site Fasanerie and make their findings available to experts and authorities. The aim is to encourage them to take action and train them as bumblebee helpers. In this way, schools become active in the protection of bumblebees and other wild bees; the pupils also become aware of the importance of insect diversity.

The background to the content is the protection of native insects, which are important for nature and people. This is because the decline in biodiversity will have far-reaching consequences for the pollination of our plants, and therefore also our crops, and for the stability of ecosystems. Germany is home to around 560 species of wild bees, including 41 species of bumblebee. Many wild bee species are dependent on certain plant species. If these are missing in nature, these wild bee species become extinct. Unfortunately, many pupils have little knowledge about the diversity of insects and their function in ecosystems. Bumblebees in particular are very well suited as model organisms to arouse the interest of children and young people and get them interested in the topic of insect conservation.
