Pheasantry Ark Park
The Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Livestock Breeds (GEH) designates the Wiesbaden Pheasantry as an Ark Park.
The Tier- und Pflanzenpark Fasanerie Wiesbaden has been one of the three Ark Parks in the state of Hesse since June 23, 2023 and is actively involved in the conservation breeding of endangered domestic and farm animal breeds. It is primarily involved in public relations and educational work. At Fasanerie Wiesbaden, the focus is on presenting the diversity of the various breeds of domestic and farm animals.
In addition to endangered European wild animals, the Wiesbaden pheasantry keeps selected domestic animal breeds as ambassadors for their species. From the running duck to the giant donkey, there is a representative of every animal group at the Wiesbaden pheasantry. The Welsh Blacknose sheep and Poitou donkeys are bred according to the criteria of their respective herd books and also play an important role in animal-assisted work with visitors. Wool pellets made from sheep's wool can be purchased in the zoo store. These are an excellent natural fertilizer and water reservoir.
Visitors can learn about the origins of animal foods and products in the zoo's own wool workshop or during a variety of nature education activities. During guided tours of the farm animals, the youngest visitors in particular experience direct contact with goats, sheep and donkeys. This emotional experience is used to draw attention to the loss of agrobiodiversity due to the decline in the number of old and endangered domestic and farm animal breeds.
