The declaration of acknowledgment of paternity can be made at any registry office and youth welfare office in Germany as well as with notaries. Recognition of paternity of a child is only possible if paternity of another man does not already exist.

Recognition creates a family relationship between father and child with consequences under maintenance and inheritance law. The legal representation and family name of the child remain unaffected.
