Dog tax

If you keep a dog, you may have to pay a dog tax. You can find information on this here.
Every dog that is kept in Wiesbaden must be registered and wear a tax tag.

The dog tax is a local expense tax. It can be levied by the municipalities in accordance with municipal statutes for the keeping of dogs. The owner of a dog is anyone who has a dog in their household or business.

The keeping of guide dogs, service dogs, dogs belonging to forestry workers and gamekeepers, for example, may be exempt or reduced from the tax, depending on the municipal statutes.

As a rule, the tax liability begins the month after a dog is taken into the household.
The tax liability ends at the end of the month in which dog ownership ends.

Tax exemptions and tax reductions are granted on application. Information on these tax concessions can be found in §§ 7 + 8 of the dog tax statutes. The dog tax is determined by a tax assessment notice. If dog ownership ends, the dog tax stamp must be returned.
