Register marriage (local authorities)
Unmarried persons of legal age who are not related to each other can get married.
Registration is required for the marriage. This must be done at the registry office or a local authority with the registry office of the main or secondary residence of one of the couple. To avoid long waiting times, an appointment should be made.
The marriage must always be registered in person by both parties. If one of the spouses does not understand German, a sworn interpreter is required. The registration is valid for a maximum of six months (after completion of the legal examination) until the marriage ceremony.
The marriage ceremony can take place at any registry office or local authority with a registry office in the Federal Republic of Germany. Witnesses are not required.
A declaration of name can be made.
After the marriage ceremony, a marriage certificate can be issued on request.
