Customs office, Rheingaustraße 190-196

The current customs office at Rheingaustraße 190-196 in Biebrich is part of the Federal Finance Directorate Southwest and reports to the main customs office in Darmstadt. In addition to checking customs duties and excise taxes, it is responsible for the settlement and clearance of customs procedures and the financial control of illegal employment.

The first customs directorate was established in Wiesbaden when the Duchy of Nassau joined the German Customs Union on 01.01.1836. With the annexation of Nassau in 1866 and the accompanying establishment of the new Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau, the independent Wiesbaden Customs Directorate was abolished on March 16, 1867 and placed under the newly formed Royal Provincial Tax Directorate in Kassel.

The main tax office in Biebrich was established on 10.07.1838 by decree of the ducal government. In 1846-49, the new customs office building was built in Rheingaustraße according to plans drawn up by senior architect Carl Boos under the direction of the later city architect Alexander Fach.

On 01.07.1907, the Prussian Ministry of Finance relocated the duties of the main tax office from Biebrich to Wiesbaden, where the former Rheinbahnhof at Rheinbahnstraße 6 was rebuilt accordingly. A modern new building at Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 4 was occupied on 11.03.1957. By decree of 30.11.1995, this Wiesbaden main customs office was dissolved and its tasks transferred to the main customs offices in Darmstadt and Gießen. The Biebrich customs office remained on the Rhine. The building, which was completed in 1849, was destroyed during the air raid on Wiesbaden on the night of February 2 to 3, 1945. Reconstruction was delayed until 21.03.1949. In 2005, the dilapidated customs office was moved into the modern building it is today. The steel loading crane with a length of 25 m had already been dismantled in the early 1990s.

The listed "Old Customs Office" and the adjoining five-storey customs warehouse were sold to Deutsche Denk Mal AG in 2012, which is building upscale apartments and commercial units there.
