Zais, Eduard

Architect

born: 08.10.1804 in Maulbronn

died: 16.02.1895 in Wiesbaden

The son of Christian Zais was initially taught by Georg August Lerch, an assistant to the architect and Darmstadt court architect Georg Moller, and then probably studied architecture in Karlsruhe and later in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1825, he joined the Nassau civil service as assistant to the court building director Friedrich Ludwig Schrumpf and passed the Nassau state examination in 1827. From 1840-52, Zais worked as master builder for the offices of Wiesbaden, Wehen and Idstein, then until 1858 as district master builder and building inspector for the Nassau building construction district and from 1870-73 as district building official in Wiesbaden.

Among other things, he made a name for himself as an architect of sacred buildings, e.g. the Protestant Johanneskirche in (Eltville-)Erbach. Zais also designed the school and former town hall building in Kaub and the former school in Bad Schwalbach am Taunus.
