Wiesbaden Fencing Club 1879 e.V. (WFC)

At the beginning of January 1879, the Wiesbaden Fencing Club 1879 e.V. (WFC) was one of the first in Germany to be founded. The first German fencing club was founded in Hanover in 1862. Later, six clubs in Wiesbaden were involved in this sport for a time, including clubs in Biebrich, Erbenheim and at the Turnerbund. However, all but the oldest club gave up fencing over time. In 1924, the women's section of the club was founded.

The greatest success of a Wiesbaden fencer dates back to 1936, when Otto Adam won the bronze medal with the foil team at the Olympic Games in Berlin. In the post-war years, the WFC was a fencing stronghold, attracting athletes from Mainz, Offenbach and Frankfurt. Siegfried Fröhlich also moved from TV Biebrich to the WFC in 1950. He was runner-up several times with epee and sabre among the seniors.

From the early 1980s until 2014, he led the club, which has just under 100 members, as president. Pupils and young people make up a large proportion of these, with 35 active members. Of the three types of weapon, foil and epee were practiced in Wiesbaden in 2009, while sabre was not. On November 6, 2004, the WFC hosted the final of the German Cup in front of the Kurhaus Colonnade in Wiesbaden.
