thalhaus (rear building)
In 1977, the "artists' group Tripol", Wiesbaden's first cultural center initiative, started out of a gallery in Yorkstraße and was very popular. Visual artists, dancers, photographers, musicians, mime artists, writers and art enthusiasts, who until then had been quite isolated from each other, were enthusiastic about the idea of jointly founding a domicile for so-called free culture.
The initiators found a home for the Kulturhaus in a run-down two-storey wine shop in the rear building of Karlstraße 15. The awarding of the Culture Prize of the State Capital of Wiesbaden to the "Wiesbadener HinterHaus-Gruppe Tripol e.V." in 1988 brought a possible new house into play. It took another ten years before the current thalhaus at Nerotal 18 was finally converted into the headquarters of the Kulturhaus.
The "cultural diversity under one roof", which was a principle in the rear building, also became a requirement in the new thalhaus. The gallery for contemporary art, the many possibilities of the stage for cabaret, theater, variety, lectures and scenic readings as well as a wide variety of music offerings with a focus on jazz were retained. In addition, there was a strong commitment to cultural work in theater projects with people with mental and/or physical disabilities. Some activities are now realized through cooperations.
