Stahr studied theology in Halle, switched to philology and worked as a teacher in Halle and Oldenburg. On leave from 1845 due to his poor health, he traveled for many years and met the writer Fanny Lewald in Rome, with whom he soon became passionately involved. After divorcing his first wife in 1854, the way was clear for this love affair to be legalized; he married Fanny Lewald in 1855 and from then on devoted himself to his literary work.

Due to severe pneumonia, which he contracted in 1875, Stahr sought treatment in Wiesbaden. He died during his cure and was buried in the Old Cemetery.
