Municipal honors
The city of Wiesbaden recognizes the extraordinary voluntary work of many citizens in clubs, associations, political parties and churches, in the social sector, in sport, in politics, in the fire department, in environmental protection and elsewhere with various awards.
The highest distinction, honorary citizenship, is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the state capital. Since 1892, this has been awarded to 27 people. There are currently (2015) three honorary citizens living in Wiesbaden: Rudi Schmitt, Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden from 1968-80, who received the honorary citizenship on 18.05.1995. Former Lord Mayor, former Minister of Justice and former Federal Constitutional Judge Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Joachim Jentsch and former Minister of State Dr. Jörg Jordan were made honorary citizens on 21.09.2006.
The honorary title "Town Elder" can be awarded to citizens who have been town councillors, honorary civil servants or full-time electoral officials for at least 20 years and who have held this office without reproach.
The badge of honor can be awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services in the political, municipal, artistic, cultural, scientific, economic or social fields. The citizens' medal in gold, silver and bronze is awarded for outstanding voluntary work.
The city plaque is awarded to clubs, companies, corporations, associations and other institutions based in Wiesbaden on the occasion of their 50th (bronze), 75th (silver) or 100th (gold) anniversary or, in the case of even higher anniversaries, in gold with up to three zirconia.
Once a year, the city awards the Cultural Prize of the State Capital of Wiesbaden for special cultural achievements. It also honors outstanding sporting achievements.
