Christian Spielmann memorial stone
In 1931, a boulder was erected in the Wiesbaden city forest in memory of the local historian and first director of the city archive, Christian Spielmann.
The Christian Spielmann Stone is an almost two-meter-high boulder that was erected in 1931 on the occasion of the 70th birthday of friends and supporters of Johann Christian Karl Spielmann, the first director of the city archives of Wiesbaden. A wooded area near Christian-Spielmann-Weg, between Kapellenstraße and the Russian Chapel, was chosen as the location for the memorial stone. The stone bears an inscription commemorating the deserving researcher of Nassau's regional history: "To the Nassau local historian and poet Christian Spielmann 1861-1917".
The choice of an erratic boulder as an object of remembrance was to a certain extent determined by Spielmann himself. When he became aware of this very stone during a walk, he remarked to some friends that he wanted to erect it in honor of the former Duchy of Nassau. Taking up this idea, the initiators of the memorial chose the boulder decades later.
On the morning of October 19, 1931, representatives of the city such as Lord Mayor Georg Krücke and numerous admirers and companions of Spielmann gathered at the boulder decorated with the flags of Nassau to mark the inauguration. The ceremony began with a performance by the Wiesbaden Teachers' Choir under the direction of Hermann Massenkeil (1889-1974). Lothar Lüstner (1882-1955), a former employee of Spielmann's and the city archivist at the time, then welcomed those present. This was followed by poems and speeches, including one by Oberschulrat Runkel, who emphasized Spielmann's importance as a local historian and nature lover in reference to the design of the memorial. The dedication was then carried out and the stone was placed in the care of the town. In the evening, a second ceremony was held in the small Kurhaus hall, hosted by the spa administration and the Literary Society, of which Christian Spielmann had been chairman.
