Schlegel studied medicine in Berlin, Bonn and Marburg from 1931-36 and wrote his dissertation on "The usefulness of artificial dietary salts and other aids for the preparation of salt-free diets" in 1938. In 1944, he qualified as a professor of internal medicine. After participating in the war and being imprisoned, he joined the Marburg University Medical Clinic in 1949 and became a specialist in internal medicine and head of the X-ray department in 1950. In 1959, he was appointed Chief Physician at the First Medical Clinic of the Wiesbaden Municipal Hospitals, which he headed until 1984. From 1966-68, he also served as medical director.
He published over 80 papers on various diagnostic and therapeutic aspects, as well as in the field of experimental medicine. He was also Permanent Secretary of the German Society of Internal Medicine from 1960-84. He received numerous awards, including the Citizen's Medal in Silver (1973) and Gold (1979), the Badge of Honor of the Hesse State Medical Association (1981) and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1985). The Professional Association of German Internists honored him with the Günther Budelmann Medal in 1986. Schlegel is buried in the North Cemetery.
