The name "Schläferskopf" is interpreted in different ways: it could refer to the dragging or hauling of tree trunks down into the valley, i.e. to forestry operations. The dormice, which have lived here in considerable numbers since time immemorial, may also be responsible for the name.
The elevation at 454 m above sea level near the Iron Hand is crowned by the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower, a stylized keep erected in 1906 by the Wiesbaden Beautification Association. The farm buildings from 1908 replaced a refuge built in 1860. The 2.8 km long so-called Schläferskopf tunnel was planned by the state geologist Karl Koch to supply Wiesbaden with drinking water. The Schläferskopf, which is part of the Wiesbaden landscape conservation area, is a great place for walks and hikes.
