Schenck studied law from 1846, initially in Giessen and from 1849 in Heidelberg. After completing his studies in 1850, he initially worked in the Nassau judicial and administrative service, including as a district court clerk (assessor) in Wiesbaden. In 1854, he set up as a lawyer in Idstein. He later worked as a lawyer and notary in Wiesbaden until 1883.
Schenck was an early supporter of the cooperative system. In 1861, he co-founded the Wiesbadener Volksbank. From 1862-83, he worked as director of the Hesse-Central Rhine Cooperative Association and then until 1896, as successor to Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, as lawyer for the General Association of German Commercial and Economic Cooperatives in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He was also a member of the supervisory board of the Deutsche Genossenschaftsbank. In 1864-66 he sat for the Progress Party in the Second Chamber of the Assembly of the Estates of the Duchy of Nassau, in 1871-74 and 1883-93 he was a member of the Reichstag (constituency 2 Wiesbaden) and in 1892-96 a member of the Prussian House of Representatives (constituency 9 Wiesbaden).
