Marxheimer, Moritz

Marxheimer, Moritz

Lawyer, notary

Born: 28.02.1871 in Wiesbaden

Died: 27.10.1942 in Mauthausen concentration camp

Marxheimer studied law in Heidelberg, Berlin and Marburg from 1890. In Heidelberg, he founded the Jewish student association "Badenia" together with Max Mainzer and Max Oppenheimer. In the statutes, the members defined themselves as German students of Jewish faith and advocated the integration of Jews into society. After completing his studies, he was registered as a lawyer at the Wiesbaden District Court in May 1899, appointed a councillor of justice in 1917 and a notary in July 1919. From 1920-33 he was associated with the lawyers Dr. Alfred Landsberg and Dr. Karl Weber. This partnership, which practiced both civil and criminal law, had one of the largest practices in Wiesbaden. On November 14, 1935, Marxheimer was dismissed as a notary due to the "Nuremberg Race Laws". He was banned from practising as a lawyer and his name was removed from the list of lawyers on December 1, 1938.

From 1923-42, Marxheimer was the first chairman of the Jewish community in Wiesbaden. He was also a member of various other associations, e.g. he led the Wiesbaden chapter of the Zionist association Keren Hayesod together with the community rabbi Paul Lazarus. In 1938 and 1940, he had to sell his houses in Wiesbaden in order to be able to make the compulsory payments imposed on his Jewish fellow citizens.

On September 1, 1942, Justice Councillor Marxheimer was deported on the last transport from Wiesbaden to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, from where he was taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp on October 22, 1942, where he died shortly afterwards. A street in Klarenthal is named after him.
