Laspée was educated at the institute of his father, the pedagogue Johannes de Laspée, and at Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's educational establishment in Yverdonles-Bains in Switzerland. He studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art under Prof. Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863), among others.

From 1842-75 he taught drawing at the military school founded by August Freiherr von Kruse and at the Pädagogium. From 1844 he also taught at the humanistic grammar school in Wiesbaden. On the recommendation of Ludwig Knaus, Laspée was appointed curator of the Duchy of Nassau Picture Gallery. His book on the "Basic Rules of Painterly Perspective" was published in Wiesbaden in 1883.
