The monument to the fallen of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 on Schiersteiner Straße originally stood on the parade ground of the Hessian Fusilier Regiment No. 80 and was unveiled on December 16, 1874, the birthday of Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, who brought about Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.

The ten-metre-high, square monument, which rests on a sturdy sandstone base, is crowned by a pedestal on which lies a bronze lion - a symbol of bravery and strength. Above the cornice, four bronze eagles with laurel wreaths in their claws adorn the war memorial. The upper frieze lists the places where battles were won (Weißenburg, Wörth, Sedan, Paris). Eight iron crosses with rings are hung in the corners, marble plaques on the four sides of the war memorial contain the names of the fallen. The title of the memorial plaque on the front contains the dedication and the names of the donors: "To the comrades of the Hessian Fusilier Regiment No 80 who remained in the 1870/71 campaign, the officer corps". Below this are the names of the fallen officers. Above the carved sunbeams of the memorial, the credo of the 80 regiment is written in a semi-circle: "And when our hour strikes in the red of battle, welcome then, soulful soldier's death".

The war memorial was moved to what was then Gersdorff-Platz in 1910/1911, after an ensemble of barracks, military hospital and officers' mess had been built there. When Gersdorff-Platz had to make way for a reorganization of the infrastructure in 1936, it was moved back to Schiersteiner Straße. It is now located on a newly laid out square, 100 m away from the original site, further out of town.
