Hospices
In 1996, the interest group for the disabled opened the first inpatient hospice with Advena in Erbenheim, as well as the Bärenherz children's hospice in 2001, which has twelve places and five apartments for relatives. In the same year, the Wiesbadener Hospizgesellschaft was founded as the sponsor of the inpatient hospices, to which the Haus St. Ferrutius in Taunusstein-Bleidenstadt, which was converted from a short-term care facility, has belonged since 2006.
In addition to the hospices, palliative care was developed in the 1990s to maintain the quality of life of terminally ill patients in the final stages of their illness through pain relief. In 2006, the Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken (HSK ) opened its own palliative care unit with ten beds. In addition to the inpatient and outpatient hospice and palliative care facilities, the care and support of the dying in retirement and nursing homes and in their families with the support of outpatient care services has come to the fore in recent years.
Since 2004, all of Wiesbaden's facilities for end-of-life care have been linked in the non-profit association HospizPalliativNetz Wiesbaden und Umgebung. Since 2007, the Centre for Outpatient Palliative Care at the Wiesbaden Pain and Palliative Care Centre has been responsible for the organization and financing of the association.
