Holbach began his military career as a cadet in Munich, in 1828 he was taken on by the Duchy of Nassau as a lieutenant, from 1850 he held a position in the War Department (the government's ministerial department for military affairs, central military authority), from 1855 he was head of the Nassau Jäger Battalion as a lieutenant colonel, from 1862-66 he was a member of the State Council and head of the War Department. He was promoted to general in 1865 and retired in 1866 after the campaign against Prussia. In 1848/49 he took part in the campaigns in Baden and Schleswig-Holstein.
Holbach was considered amiable and even-tempered, character traits that enabled him to resolve conflicts. He is buried in the Old Cemetery.
