Herzfeld Monument
The memorial stone in the Reisinger and Herbert grounds near the main railway station bears the inscription "JOHN HEARTFIELD 1891-1968 Founder of political photomontage WIELAND HERZFELDE 1896-1988 Publisher and writer commemorated. The brothers spent their youth in Wiesbaden, later fighting against war and fascism with the means of their art". The signature GFPK follows as a reference to the (now dissolved) "Gesellschaft zur Förderung von Publizistik und Kommunikation" (Society for the Promotion of Journalism and Communication) in Wiesbaden, which had the memorial stone erected as part of commemorative events for the Herzfeld brothers. It was unveiled on April 6, 1995 in the presence of graphic artist Klaus Staeck and book scholar Hans Halbey.
Following the approval of the memorial by the city council in May 1994, political disputes arose. It was argued that the brothers, as communists who deliberately chose the GDR, did not deserve to be honored. In addition, an accusation of denunciation was made against Wieland Herzfelde in relation to the years 1936/37, but this could not be substantiated. The GFPK's plan received public support, which was reflected in the media, and in December 1994 the city parliament gave its approval.
