Herxheimer, the brother of the rabbi of Anhalt-Bernburg, Salomon Herxheimer (1801-1884), was a successful merchant who traded in crops and cloth.
In 1826, he was granted Jewish protection on the occasion of his marriage to Jette Meyer from Staden in the Wetterau. In 1838, after the death of his first wife, he entered into a second marriage with Johannette Liebmann from Schierstein; his assets are listed at 5,200 fl.
In 1849, Herxheimer bought the Viernselmühle for 14,200 fl. and applied for citizenship, which was granted; his assets now amounted to 25,000 fl. Herxheimer had 10 children, including his sons Salomon Herxheimer (1842-1899) and Karl Herxheimer, and lived on the Michelsberg.
