Herxheimer, brother of the dermatologist Karl Herxheimer, completed his medical studies in Würzburg, Heidelberg and Berlin, came to Wiesbaden as a general practitioner in 1866 and applied to become a citizen the following year.

From this time onwards, he practiced first on Michelsberg, then in Langgasse and Taunusstrasse. In 1874, he moved to Frankfurt as a specialist in skin diseases, where he founded a clinic for skin and venereal diseases in 1877.

After his death during a mountain hike in Tyrol, his wife Fanny, née Livingstone, established the Dr. S. Herxheimer Foundation for needy skin patients.
