Goethe stone
The Goethe Stone near Frauenstein, an obelisk made of rough stone blocks, commemorates the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's summer stay in Wiesbaden in 1815, during which he pursued his love of geological studies. On July 6th of that year, Goethe had undertaken a country trip to Frauenstein and fell on the "Spitzen Stein" when the 65-year-old tried to follow his companion, the 18-year-old sister of the pharmacist Johann August Lade, Philippine Lade (1797-1879).
To commemorate Goethe's stay in Frauenstein and to mark the 100th anniversary of his death, the Wiesbaden Beautification Association had the triangular pyramid erected in 1932 with the financial support of privy councillor Wilhelm von Opel. The monument was based on a design by government architect Rudolf A. Zichner (1887-1965). A quote from the 30-year-old poet was carved into the stone: "This desire to point the pyramid of my existence, whose base is indicated and founded for me, as high as possible into the air, outweighs everything else".
As there was no reference to the poet himself, a bronze plaque with Goethe's likeness was added in 1949. A bronze memorial plaque added later explains the historical background.
