Protestant family education in the Wiesbaden deanery

The Protestant Family Education, based in the Haus an der Marktkirche, is an institution of the Protestant Deanery of Wiesbaden.

The Mothers' School was founded in 1955 on the initiative of committed women from the Protestant Women's Aid Association. It was the first institution of its kind in Wiesbaden. From February 1958, it opened its doors in Burgstraße under the direction of Lilli Kämmerer. At the time, the institution was run by the Regional Association of Protestant Women's Aid. The name of the Mothers' School did not come about by chance, as it was almost exclusively women and girls who were looking for help with their family responsibilities at that time. The Mothers' School did pioneering work in Wiesbaden in the field of infant care and birth preparation. As early as 1961, there were also infant care courses for expectant fathers. 10 years after starting work in Burgstraße, the apartment was too small and they moved to Emser Straße 3. In 1962, a branch was established in Biebrich at Elise-Kirchner-Straße 15.

In the early days, the focus was on courses to prepare for the birth of a child, baby care and home economics, but in the following years the emphasis shifted more towards education, psychology and social networking. Playgroups for mothers and children followed in 1971. In order to appeal to more fathers, the Mothers' School was renamed the Family Education Center (FBS) in 1972 and successfully continued its program.

In the following years, the FBS entered into important collaborations with the Protestant adult education center, the Catholic family education center and the neighborhood house in Biebrich. The first breastfeeding group started in 1981. Two years later, the first flea market for children's clothing was initiated in Wiesbaden, which quickly developed into swap meets and bazaars for children's clothing and toys. The Family Education Center responded to the social changes of the 1980s and 1990s with offers on reconciling family and career, separation and divorce, patchwork families and violence against children.

In addition to traditional topics such as birth preparation and infant care, parent-child work, PEKiP, playgroups and family counseling both online and as a hybrid offer, the EFB is increasingly focusing on work with fathers. In addition, the childminder placement service was an integral part from 1999 to 2021, as was the grandparent service founded in 2005, which existed until 2019.

In 2009, the EFB was involved in the conception of the emerging KinderElternZentren (KiEZ) and, as an institution of the association, became the sponsor of one of the first four KiEZs. One year later, it returned to its original, now renovated premises at Schlossplatz 4, Haus an der Marktkirche.

In recent years, the range of tasks has again been expanded with many cooperation partners. For example, the EFB designed an advanced training and qualification program for long-term employees in primary school childcare in collaboration with the municipal education authority. The same applies to the join! project, which was implemented in the course of the so-called refugee crisis in 2015 on behalf of the Institute for Preventive Pedagogy and with the support of the deanery. There are also collaborations with the Office for Social Work, for example in the form of the Wi & You vacation program or in the qualification of childminders.

In 2018, the Evangelical Deanery of Wiesbaden took over as the responsible body, which also brought with it a new name: Evangelical Family Education in the Wiesbaden Deanery. Together with the other Wiesbaden family education centers and the Office for Social Work/Parental Education and Early Help, the EFB has been organizing the Wiesbaden Family Education Day since 2019 as an information and exchange opportunity for families.

With its diverse range of courses and information events, Protestant Family Education in the Wiesbaden Deanery has set itself the goal of serving as a point of contact for all people in all phases and situations of life in order to create a place of knowledge transfer and community.
