Elisabeth Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe

Elisabeth Princess of Schaumburg-Lippe

born: 05.03.1841 in Bückeburg

died: 30.11.1926 in Wiesbaden

Elisabeth was the daughter of Georg Wilhelm Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe and his wife Ida (née Princess of Waldeck-Pyrmont). She grew up in Bückeburg. In 1866, she married Wilhelm Prince of Hanau; however, the marriage ended in divorce in 1868. The princess then lived in Wiesbaden, where she was active in charitable work.

Among other things, Elisabeth was co-founder of the Protestant Deaconess Home (with Theodor Fliedner) and chairwoman of the Vaterländischer Frauenverein. She was also the leader of an association that offered young girls various leisure activities and "religious and moral training" on Sundays. During the First World War, she was in charge of the military hospital housed in the Paulinenschlösschen. In 1917, Prinzessin-Elisabeth-Straße was named after her.
