German Film and Media Rating (FBW)

The German Film and Media Rating, based in Biebrich Castle, assesses the quality of German and international film productions and awards outstanding works with the "valuable" and "particularly valuable" ratings. The awards are a seal of quality and recommendations for moviegoers and media users, providing orientation in the diverse range of films on offer. The German Film and Media Rating is a higher state authority that reports to the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art. It was founded in Wiesbaden on August 20, 1951 as an expert body for all the federal states in order to provide the federal states with a competent and independent basis for the promotion of film as a cultural asset. The federal states appoint independent experts from a wide range of media sectors as honorary experts. Five-member juries are formed from a pool of 85 experts, who view the submitted films in ever-changing constellations in Wiesbaden and vote on the awarding of a rating after extensive discussion.

Since 1951, the German Film and Media Rating has reviewed around 28,000 films, German and international productions, mainstream and arthouse films, documentaries and short films. The following films, for example, have been rated "valuable" or "particularly valuable": "The Bridge", "Star Wars", "Inception", "The White Ribbon" and "I - Simply Incorrigible".
