Broglie, Maximilian

Broglie, Maximilian

Internist, Radiologist

Born: 28.06.1909 in Nordhalden near Constance

died: 04.09.2004 in Wiesbaden

Broglie came to Wiesbaden as a child and initially studied chemistry in Darmstadt, but soon switched to medicine. After studying at the universities of Tübingen, Marburg, Kiel and Leipzig, his career took him first to Munich as an assistant doctor, then to Aue in Saxony and finally to the University Hospital in Giessen, where he found his great role model in Prof. Helmuth Reinwein. In 1942, he habilitated in Giessen with a thesis on "centrogenic Graves' disease". A year later, he followed Reinwein as a lecturer and first senior physician at the University of Kiel.

During the war, he proved to be a talented organizer who maintained care despite heavy bomb damage. From 1945-47, he worked in his own practice in Kiel, then became head physician at Schleswig State Hospital, took over the management of the large Friedrich Ebert Hospital in Neumünster in 1950 and became an associate professor at Kiel University in 1955.

In 1959, he was appointed Chief Physician at the II. Medical Clinic of the Wiesbaden Municipal Hospitals. Here, together with his colleague Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Schlegel, he set up two intensive care units and established a nephrology and a cardiology department.

Also in 1959, Broglie founded the Professional Association of German Internists (BDI) together with other internists in Wiesbaden. He was initially its secretary, then president of the association from 1968-74, then honorary president.

In 1974 (until 1981), he became head physician of the newly opened private "Klinik am Kurpark" (later "Medizinische Klinik am Kurpark"). The German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM) elected him an honorary member in 1982.

Over the course of his life, Broglie published more than 90 clinical-scientific papers, mainly dealing with practical medicine.

Broglie is buried in the North Cemetery.
