Braun, Margarete Luise Elfriede

Braun, Margarethe Luise Elfriede

Theologian, parish assistant

born: 15.12.1893 in Hamburg

died: 22.04.1966 in Hamburg

Braun worked as a teacher in Wiesbaden from 1914-15, during which time she took additional examinations in Latin and Greek. From 1915, she studied theology and education in Frankfurt am Main, Breslau, Jena and Marburg.

From 1921-25, Braun was a parish assistant in the parish of the Ringkirche in Wiesbaden. In 1925, she took part in the first conference of the Association of Protestant Women Theologians in Marburg. Due to a lack of opportunities for advancement in the Nassau church, Braun moved to the Hamburg state church in 1926, where she found an energetic supporter in the liberal-minded pastor Heinz Beckmann (1877-1939).

In 1926, she became the second woman ever to pass the second theological examination of the Hamburg regional church and was ordained as a parish assistant in 1928. In 1934, the Hamburg regional bishop transferred her against her will to care for the patients of the Eppendorf General Hospital and the inmates of the Feuerbergstraße girls' institution in Ohlsdorf.

In 1937, she became a member of the NSDAP.

From 1947 until her retirement in 1959, Braun again worked as a counselor for girls and young women. In her retirement, she was involved in looking after old people's homes, among other things.

Braun was buried in the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Wiesbaden-Dotzheim.
