Wiesbaden Lawyers' Band

Since its foundation in the early 1970s, the Wiesbadener Juristenband can look back on numerous successful performances at home and abroad. In 2011, it received the "Honorary Award for Special Cultural Commitment" from the state capital of Wiesbaden.

The Wiesbaden Lawyers' Band has been an integral part of the music and event scene in the state capital for four decades. When some lawyers got together at the Wiesbaden Lawyers' Ball in 1971 to revive the music - Dixieland and swing - that they had already played during their studies "just for fun", an extraordinary formation was formed that quickly became so well known that the media began to take an interest in it. Lawyers and jazz was not something that the legal representatives, who were often unjustifiably labeled as "dry", were thought to be capable of.

The band soon appeared on such well-known television programs as "Blauer Bock", "Großer Preis", "ARD-Ratgeber Recht", "ZDF-Fernsehgarten", NDR and SWF talk shows, "Drehscheibe" and "Tele-Illustrierte" as well as on "ZDF-Sportstudio" and subsequently performed in many German cities as well as abroad, for example at the Vienna Lawyers' Ball in the Hofburg or on an elegant yacht in New York.

The band has represented the state of Hesse several times, in Bonn, in Brussels or at the anniversary celebrations for the Day of German Unity 2000 in Dresden, but the seven Wiesbadeners are musical ambassadors for their home town in particular. Whether at events in Wiesbaden's twin cities of Görlitz, Klagenfurt, Montreux and San Sebastián, on cruise ships between Singapore and Spitzbergen or at international conferences, the band always promotes the city with its name, the city coat of arms in its logo and the bright Wiesbaden ties.

Even at "professional" events such as changes of office at courts and public prosecutors' offices, the inauguration of new judicial buildings or anniversaries, the participation of the Wiesbaden Lawyers' Band is perceived as a pleasant diversion from the often very "official" celebrations. The Lawyers' Band has been a welcome guest at the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Justice, the Hessian State Parliament and the universities of Frankfurt, Mainz and Marburg, as well as at the Federal Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court. And, of course, the band is a regular at events in Wiesbaden's town hall (Rathaus, Neues) or in the Hessian State Theater, at city and district festivals, at wineries and in marquees.

The Wiesbaden lawyers' band sees social commitment as a constant obligation. Performances in retirement homes and churches as well as for charitable institutions are part of their program. In particular, the band's benefit concerts on the occasion of "round" anniversaries at the Kurhaus (Kurhaus, Neues) and the Hessisches Staatstheater each raised five-figure sums for the beneficiaries. In addition, there are pro rata proceeds from the sale of the three LPs produced by the band, including one with Bill Ramsey, and five CDs. In addition to Bill Ramsey, other jazz professionals such as Spiegle Wilcox, Beryl Bryden, Hazy Osterwald and Duncan Galloway have also enjoyed "joining" the Wiesbaden legal band.

The composition of the band is remarkably constant. For decades, the only changes were on saxophone and clarinet, where, after Loca Stiplosec initially joined in 1985, Peter Köhler from the Hessian State Chancellery, who was also a great jazz connoisseur, was followed after his sudden death in 1993 by Max Fröhlich from the Social Welfare Department of the City of Wiesbaden, who retired as an active band member after his 90th birthday in 2012. In the spring of 2009, Dr. Bernhard Kaufmann, former presiding judge at Wiesbaden District Court, the band's most dedicated pianist, passed away. He was replaced by Wilfried Jüterbock.

The current members of the Wiesbadener Juristenband in 2012 are: Dr. Dieter Arlet, retired senior public prosecutor, trumpet and flugelhorn; Michael Borhauer, retired architect, clarinet and saxophone; Albert Hemes, retired head of department at the Federal Statistical Office, trombone and tenor horn; Karlhanns Henn, retired lawyer and notary, banjo and guitar; Wilfried Jüterbock, former Ministerialrat in the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, piano; Dieter "Ted" Schmidt, former State Secretary in the Hessian Ministry of Justice, bass; Rolf Thüsing, former lawyer and notary, drums and washboard.

In recognition of its activities, the Wiesbadener Juristenband was awarded the "Honorary Prize for Special Cultural Commitment" by the State Capital of Wiesbaden(Cultural Prize of the State Capital of Wiesbaden) in February 2011.
