State Women's Council of Hesse (LFR)
The State Women's Council of Hesse (LFR) campaigns for equal rights for women in public and private life. It represents the interests of more than 1.2 million women in Hesse.
On September 16, 1952, the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Hessischer Frauenverbände" was founded as a loose association of 16 state associations to promote cooperation and joint representation of interests.
The founding objectives included the implementation of the principle of equal rights in accordance with the Basic Law, the promotion of women in all areas of daily life, full equality in public life, the expansion of matrimonial property rights, child and maternity protection, non-partisan and non-denominational working methods, the recognition of female employment and the cultivation of contacts/connections with women and women's associations in the GDR.
Over 60 years later, the number of member associations has almost tripled to 47. The "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Hessischer Frauenverbände" became the Landesfrauenrat Hessen (LFR).
It represents the interests of more than 1.2 million women in Hesse and works independently, non-partisan and non-denominationally.
The regulations on organization and tasks laid down in September 1952 have lost none of their relevance and are still considered to be the main focus of the LFR Hessen's work today. The LFR Hessen continues to ensure the exchange of information and experience between the associations. The LFR Hessen comments on women-relevant legislative projects of the Hessian state government and submits motions to the state parliament and government as well as the supporting parties. As an important opinion leader in public life, it sends female representatives to various state committees, such as the Hesse European Committee, the Monitoring Committee for European Regional Funding and the Hessian Broadcasting Council. Participation in all committees and good cooperation with the Women's Policy Unit at the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs enable the LFR Hessen to have a say at all levels of social, political and economic life.
The management of the State Women's Council of Hesse is based at the Office for Civic Women's Work in Wiesbaden.
The LFR Hessen is in constant contact with the women's councils of the other federal states and the German Women's Council.
