Office for Civic Women's Work e. V.

Topics from politics, society and professional development are the focus of the numerous BüroF events offered throughout Hesse.

The founding of the Büro für Staatsbürgerliche Frauenarbeit e. V. (BüroF) at the beginning of 1953 was based on its predecessor, the Büro für Frauenfragen. The Office for Women's Issues was developed and established in October 1950 under the leadership of the American women's advisor Betsy Knapp and with the help of her assistant Hedwig Schmitt-Maas.

With the help of civic education across party and denominational differences, women were to be encouraged to participate in and help shape the social and political life of the young democracy after the catastrophe of National Socialism and the Second World War. To this end, seminars and courses on the foundations of the democratic state were offered throughout Hesse as preparation for political activity in the communities and in the state.

After the American funding ran out at the end of 1952, the Office for Civic Women's Work was founded as a non-profit association thanks to the inter-party coalition of female members of the state parliament at the time, and financial security was secured for the office. For 60 years now, the office, with its services geared towards the living conditions of women, has been a place for mutual understanding, personal and professional development and the discussion of social and political issues. A board with female members of the Hessian state parliament ensures the non-partisan work of BüroF.

To this day, there is a well-founded and varied range of activities on offer, including lectures, seminars, panel discussions and excursions on the basics of social and local politics and professional development, as well as current topics such as intercultural openness and competence, demographic change and the importance of modern media.

The Büro für Staatsbürgerliche Frauenarbeit e.V. is a state-wide organization based in Wiesbaden and is unique in Germany. It is networked with Hessian women's groups, women's associations and women's representatives as well as educational institutions and other democratic social groups in Hesse and offers interested women a varied program of events; this is also listed on the website. Women's groups and associations can individually book a speaker on a desired topic on site. This regional offer, developed in its specific form solely by BüroF, meets a demand for further training opportunities for women, particularly in the rural regions of Hesse.

A cross-party board with female members of the Hessian state parliament guarantees the non-partisan and non-denominational work of BüroF.
