Important milestone for Rheinhöhe sports park: excavation completed, shell construction begins
Construction work on the Rheinhöhe sports park continues to progress. Following the successful completion of the earthworks, the shell construction is now beginning. A total of around 130,000 cubic meters of earth have been excavated and around 500 foundation piles, each 20 meters long, have been installed. These form the foundations for the future swimming pool, ice rink and other sports facilities.
"The construction of the Rheinhöhe sports park is an important project for Wiesbaden. A modern and sustainable sports facility is being created here that will benefit many generations of citizens. Despite challenges in the construction process, progress is being made step by step - a strong sign for the future of sport in our city," says Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende.
The construction site has faced challenges in recent months due to persistent rainfall. The transportation of the excavated material had to be interrupted at times as landfill sites could not be accessed. The use of the Konrad-Adenauer-Ring was also briefly impaired by contamination. However, thanks to targeted measures and a specially installed tire washing facility, traffic was quickly able to flow again without restrictions.
Now that the earthworks have been completed, the structural work can begin. The first step is to pour the floor slab, which will require around 4,300 cubic meters of concrete - equivalent to around 8,000 tons of material. The load-bearing walls, ceilings and pool bodies will then be built, which will serve as the basis for the stainless steel cladding of the pools. The concrete will be transported via the access road in Holsteinstraße. Depending on the progress of the construction work, around ten concrete mixer trips are planned every day. Construction of the roof structure, which consists of over 100 lattice girders with a length of up to 40 meters, will begin at the same time as the shell construction.
Roof assembly will begin in October 2025, creating a total roof area of 15,000 square meters - the equivalent of more than two sports fields. The timber structure will be supported by a steel framework that will be erected in parallel. In order to lift the massive construction elements, four cranes with a height of up to 60 meters will be erected in April. The largest jibs reach a span of 75 meters. This height is particularly necessary for lifting the roof construction. The pool operator mattiaqua, the city of Wiesbaden and the companies involved would like to thank all residents for their understanding during the construction work and will provide regular updates on further progress.
