Smart City theme week "fahrRAD"

The bicycle is an indispensable element of the urban mobility of the future. By investing in infrastructure, technological innovations and cultural change, cities can be made more sustainable, healthier and more liveable.

In a joint campaign week from Monday, May 12 to Friday, May 16, the state capital of Wiesbaden, together with key players from the administration and urban society, wants to draw attention to cycling in Wiesbaden. Smart City head of department Maral Koohestanian explains: "The mobility of the future combines social, economic and ecological issues, which all the more require an interdisciplinary approach. I am delighted that it has been possible to put together such a diverse program in a cross-departmental and cross-office cooperation". Koohestanian continues: "Partnerships like this promote innovation, pool resources and create practical solutions for a sustainable future."

The program is aimed at different target groups: from a bicycle coding campaign by the Wiesbaden police department, an information marketplace by and for the Wiesbaden cycling community, a themed evening on the "bicycle-friendly city", the cycling forum of the transport department and Wiesbaden's cycling office to sensor workshops for those interested in OpenData and valuable impulses from science and research.

Andreas Kowol, Head of the Transport Department, also welcomes the joint initiative: "We have been expanding the cycling infrastructure across the city since 2017 and are now seeing the results. Current figures clearly show that the proportion of cyclists is increasing, especially on longer routes and on journeys to work. In the city administration, we are working together across departmental boundaries to create even more positive incentives. The cycling theme week is a good example of this. I am looking forward to the findings that we can expect from the experts involved and the Wiesbaden cycling community."

The initiators are paying particular attention to the world of cycling data. A wide variety of formats will be used to show how existing and new data on cycling in Wiesbaden can serve as a basis for planning, evaluating and implementing measures for a bicycle-friendly city. "By systematically collecting and using this data, the city of Wiesbaden is taking a further step towards becoming a smart city in order to implement the right measures with the greatest added value for all cyclists," says Koohestanian, promising exciting visualizations that will be presented on 15 May 2025 as part of the theme evening "Wiesbaden on its way to becoming a bicycle-friendly city" at Zukunftswerk.
