"Films in the Castle" shows "Maria"
"Filme im Schloss" will be showing the biopic "Maria" - a deep tribute to the great soprano Maria Callas - on Friday, May 9, at 8 pm at the German Film and Media Review (FBW), Biebrich Castle. She is described as the greatest opera singer of her time. For the first time, "Maria" tells the story of the diva through her own eyes as she relives her turbulent, beautiful and tragic life shortly before her death in Paris in 1979.
Director Pablo Larraín specializes in unusual biopics. His portrait of the opera diva Maria Callas is set in the last week before her death. The leading role of the divine diva is played by a diva of our time: Angelina Jolie.
Paris in the 1970s. Maria Callas treats the two people who have looked after her for years, her housekeeper Bruna and her butler and chauffeur Feruccio, like serfs whose purpose in life is to indulge her whims. Although Feruccio has back problems, she constantly orders him to move the piano for no apparent reason. She herself regularly takes the drug methaqualone and avoids meetings with her doctor, Dr. Fointainebleau. She is 53 and has not sung in public for four and a half years. Rumors of a comeback for the famous opera singer are growing. She has started taking singing lessons again. She wants to sing again with a voice that is as sublime, as pure and as penetrating as it once was. However, she is unsure whether she will succeed. After dedicating her life to audiences all over the world, Maria also longs for her own voice and identity.
"Maria" is the conclusion of Larraín's trilogy about women in world history, which began with "Jackie: The First Lady" about the president's wife Jacqueline "Jackie" Kennedy and continued with "Spencer" about Princess Diana. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival at the end of August, where it was shown in competition for the Golden Lion. It was also honored with a nomination in the Best Actress - Drama category (Angelina Jolie) at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. The original English version with German subtitles will be shown.
