Second week of engagement: young people get involved in their neighborhoods
In the week from May 5 to 10, the "2nd Week of Commitment" will take place in all children's, youth and district centers in the state capital of Wiesbaden. Under the motto "Bring on the good life! - Social (in)justice", young people are getting involved in their immediate living environment - their neighborhood - on a voluntary basis and for the common good.
Head of Social Affairs Dr. Patricia Becher praised the young people's commitment: "I am incredibly proud of the young people who are taking responsibility with this week of action and volunteering for more justice. Especially at a time when young people are often portrayed as selfish or politically uninterested in public discourse, they are sending a powerful signal with their commitment - for their city, for their fellow human beings and for a fairer society. The Week of Commitment is impressive proof of how much young people can achieve if they are given the space to do so."
The week of action is inspired by the annual motto of the Youth Work Department at the Office for Social Work. Young people deal with questions of social justice - not in theory, but in practice. What does fairness mean in everyday life? Where do young people experience inequality? And: How can each and every individual contribute to a fairer society?
"Social justice becomes tangible for young people when they deal with concrete issues in their everyday lives. Discussion, reflection and action take place in youth centers - always from the perspective of the young people themselves," explains Sabine Herrmann, Head of the Youth Work Department.
The projects developed impressively reflect the diversity and creativity of open child and youth work: for example, they organize a youth flea market, bake pizza for a men's hostel, support food distribution at the food bank or design poster campaigns. Encounters between the generations, creative formats such as "Chill & Style" and beautification campaigns in public spaces show this: Commitment has many faces - and they all contribute to positively changing the way people live together in the neighborhood.
The Week of Commitment is an initiative of the Youth Work Department in the Office for Social Work of the City of Wiesbaden. It strengthens the self-efficacy of young people, promotes democratic values - and makes visible how lively and important open child and youth work is today.
