Apartment uninhabitable after fire in electrical distribution board
This morning, Wiesbaden firefighters were called to a fire in an apartment building in the street "Im Sampel" in Mainz-Kostheim. An electrical distribution board had caught fire in a first floor apartment, causing heavy smoke development. Fortunately, the resident was able to leave the apartment in time and wait in the street for the fire department.
A team wearing breathing protection immediately entered the apartment with a jet pipe to fight the fire and was able to extinguish the fire quickly. As the apartment door was open, smoke had also drifted into the stairwell of the apartment building. For this reason, another team wearing breathing apparatus was sent into the stairwell to check whether there were any other people in danger. Fortunately, the smoke did not spread beyond the apartment on fire and the stairwell. Ventilation equipment was deployed to remove the smoke.
Due to the damage to the building's electrical distribution system caused by the fire, it had to be completely disconnected from the power supply by the Mainz public utility company. The property management company, which was also present, is taking care of repairing the damage. The apartment itself is currently uninhabitable due to the fire, so the tenant has to stay with friends temporarily.
The Wiesbaden fire department deployed personnel from fire stations 1 and 2 as well as the Mainz-Kostheim and Mainz-Kastel volunteer fire departments. An ambulance was also on standby during the extinguishing work. The exact cause of the fire is being investigated by the police. (jh)
