Busy shift: many call-outs for fire and rescue services

When the firefighters of the 2nd watch department went on duty at 7.00 a.m. on Monday morning, they had no idea that the upcoming shift would be a particularly turbulent one. The emergency services of the professional fire department, several volunteer fire departments and the Wiesbaden rescue service were faced with an increased number of calls. We have summarized some of these operations in the following list:

07:24 a.m.: An automatic emergency call (eCall) is received from a vehicle on the A3 freeway. As there is no voice contact, the ambulance, emergency doctor and fire department are alerted. The emergency services are unable to find an accident and cancel the operation.

07.42 a.m.: Firefighters are called to Delkenheim to assist the ambulance service. As the situation on site is somewhat more complex, the fire department's height rescuers and a turntable ladder are called out. An injured person is roped down from the building using the turntable ladder and a pulley system and transported safely to the waiting ambulance.

10.30 a.m.: A beeping smoke alarm is reported by a home emergency call provider in Schultheißstraße. Firefighters from fire stations 1 and 2 determine that a small fire triggered by a cigarette and already extinguished was responsible for the alarm going off.

1:09 p.m.: An emergency call reports an accident involving several vehicles on the A3 freeway. Two ambulances, an emergency doctor and the fire department are alerted. Four vehicles are involved in the rear-end collision, three people are injured, two of whom are taken to hospital. Meanwhile, the fire department secures the scene of the accident.

17.39 hrs: A small fire is reported in the forest in the Bornhofenweg area. Passers-by have already extinguished the fire and the fire engine from Fire Station 1 is carrying out extinguishing work.

5.57 p.m.: A burning garbage can is reported on a building in Borkumer Straße. A fire engine from fire stations 1 and 2 is alerted together with the Dotzheim volunteer fire department. The garbage can is extinguished by the first fire engine to arrive, preventing the fire from spreading.

20.16 hrs: The fire engine of the professional fire department and the volunteer fire department Stadtmitte are alerted to Blücherstraße. Callers had reported smoke coming from the building. The emergency services discovered a small fire in the gutter of the apartment building, which was probably caused by cigarette butts. The fire is extinguished with a small extinguisher.

20.17 hrs: A small fire in Anna-Birle-Straße in Mainz-Kastel is extinguished by the fire engine from fire station 2, supported by the volunteer firefighters from the Mainz-Kastel volunteer fire department.

20.30 hrs: A fall from a great height is reported in Hans-Böckler-Straße. In addition to the emergency services, a fire engine from Fire Station 1 is also alerted. The emergency services find a senior citizen who has fallen down an embankment. They illuminate the scene and remove a fence element so that the patient can be transported to the ambulance.

21.49 hrs: An undefined odor is reported in a building in Karl-Marx-Straße. Emergency services check the affected apartments with measuring devices and other equipment. They are unable to detect any danger, which is why the operation is ended.

02.07 a.m.: A caller from Otto-Wels-Straße in Klarenthal reports a beeping smoke alarm. The emergency services check the area but cannot find any reason for the smoke alarm to go off.

02.11 a.m.: The beeping of a smoke alarm is also reported in Römerfeld Street in Mainz-Kostheim. While firefighters from fire station 2 are on the way, another caller reports a smell of burning, which is why the alarm is raised and the Kostheim volunteer fire department, among others, is alerted. On the scene, the firefighters discovered that burnt food was responsible for the smoke. They ventilate the apartment, nobody is injured.

2.42 a.m.: A room fire is reported in a tall apartment building "Im Rad". Flames are already bursting out of the window. The operation is only ended shortly before the shift change. Please refer to the separate press release on this operation.

At the end of the 24-hour shift, the 3rd watch department takes over at 7 a.m. this morning. Hopefully there will be a little less going on today! (jh)
