Worth seeing

Large parts of Glarus were destroyed by a fire in 1861. It was rebuilt within only three years in a chequerboard pattern. The town church was built as part of this effort and is now the city’s trademark.

Other sights include the medieval / modern old town, the railway station with freight shed, the locomotive sheds with hub, the Art House, the National Library, and the “Stählihaus” in Netstal which dates back to 1728.

The first written record of Glarus dates from the eighth century. The settlement was then called "Clarona", and has probably been around since the fifth century B.C.
