Worth seeing

The district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, which was developed in 2001, combines the historical and the up-to-date, the national and the international, in unique ways.

The list of sights to see in Wiesbaden's twin town Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg seems endless. It includes the legendary Checkpoint Charlie and the American Memorial Library, as well as the German Museum of Technology Berlin, the East Side Gallery, Karl-Marx-Allee, the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Martin Gropius building, and the Tempodrom. All of them are very popular tourist destinations.

Kreuzberg has always been an important part of Berlin because of its location, its culture, and its economic and social significance. The current district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg was created on January 1st, 2001, by merging the former independent East-Berlin district of Friedrichshain with the West-Berlin district of Kreuzberg, and is considered the heart of Berlin. It is known for being the most youthful, most creative, and most exciting district of the nation's capital.

Emblematic of the district is Oberbaumbrücke, a bridge built in the gothic architectural style called "Märkische Backsteingotik". The bridge is a distinct highlight of the area as it offers a spectacular view into the city. Karl-Marx-Allee, also called "Europe's longest architectural monument", is also worth a look. A boat tour on the Spree river and the "Landwehrkanal" offer visitors exceptional impressions and opposites, such as the "Gründerzeit" buildings on the one hand and highly modern structures like the "Energieforum" on the other.

Though Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is densely populated, there are many parks, green areas, and landscaped strips of riverbank for lingering and relaxing. Among them are the "Park am Gleisdreieck", Viktoria, Waldeck, Böckler and Görlitzer parks, as well as "Park an der Spree" and "Volkspark Friedrichshain".
