New concept for the Rhein.Main.Ufer

The new Rhein.Main.Ufer concept shows how the riverbank in Wiesbaden can be made more beautiful and liveable. It is about leisure, nature, gastronomy and mobility.

The visualization shows the upgraded area at Schwanenbucht: with seating, a view of the Main, a new traffic situation and the playground.

Why does Wiesbaden need a new riverside concept?

More and more people are moving to the city and region and spending their leisure time on the banks of the Rhine and Main. The demand for gastronomy is increasing. People are looking for direct access to the water or opportunities to simply enjoy the sunset with friends or have a picnic. The new Rhein.Main.Ufer concept shows how the riverbank in its five districts on the Rhine and Main can be designed in the future.

The concept

There are 126 measures spread along the 14-kilometre stretch of riverbank from Schierstein to Kostheim. These aim to create places of peace, meeting places and sporting activities, but also stand for natural habitats and climate adaptation measures.

Proposals for new routes or the separation of footpaths and cycle paths, car-free areas and additions to local public transport also highlight the improvement of mobility in various places.

In addition to smaller changes, such as shady tree planting, new seating or play areas, there are also larger projects such as outdoor sports facilities under the Schierstein Bridge or a new park for all citizens east of the Reduit.

Wiesbaden's riverside areas along the Rhine and Main have been undergoing change for some time now. The withdrawal of commercial uses has created space for residential areas along the river, increasing the pressure on open spaces. At the same time, people are generally becoming more aware of the landscape along the riverbanks as a leisure and recreational destination. With the Rhein.Main.Ufer concept, the city of Wiesbaden wants to shape this change and is focusing on open space development along the approximately 14-kilometre-long banks of the Rhine and Main in Wiesbaden.

This allowed citizens to have their say

The people of Wiesbaden contributed their ideas to the planning process in two rounds:

  • Spring 2021: Over 500 suggestions were collected.
  • November 2021: Further suggestions were added online and on site.

Around 70 percent of the ideas were incorporated into the concept.

Detailed information on the participation can be found at Rhein.Main.Ufer - Bürgerbeteiligung Wiesbaden (opens in a new tab).

What happens next?

The city council adopted the concept in July 2023. It is a catalog of measures that invites you to find a favorite place and accompany its transformation.

Smaller measures, such as new seating areas, can be implemented quickly. Large projects, such as a car-free riverbank, need more time.

The concept shows the way forward for the coming years.
