Flood protection on the Rhine and Main

Floods cannot be prevented and absolute protection against floods is not possible. It is therefore important to limit potential flood damage through preventive planning and action.

Precautionary measures of the city of Wiesbaden

Keeping floodplains free/preventing flooding

  • Identification of areas at risk of flooding in urban land-use plans
  • Keeping free and creating water retention areas in the floodplain
  • Avoiding new construction along watercourses: New construction in floodplains is only possible under special approval conditions, for example a construction method adapted to the flooding

Technical flood protection systems

Local, mobile flood protection walls in Hafenstraße at Schierstein harbor and at four street entrances in Mainz-Kostheim that lead to the Main. These mobile facilities are effective in Schierstein up to runoff events that statistically occur every 40 years. In Kostheim, they are effective for discharges that statistically occur every 30 years for floods on the Main and every 60 years for floods on the Rhine.

Information for the public

The aim is to raise awareness of the dangers of flooding at a local level and to draw attention to personal responsibility. In the event of flooding, the public can access current water levels and water level forecasts as well as situation reports via various media.
