Time for ecohumanism
The 15th Sustainability Dialogue with Professor Pierre Ibisch, Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende and Andreas Kowol, Head of the Environment Department, took place on October 28, 2021 at the Kulturforum. The topic was "Climate crisis, ecosystem crisis, human crisis: time for eco-humanism".
Pierre Ibisch's thesis: The (dis)order of our globalized, ego-based world is leading to more and more resource consumption and is driving the combined ecosystem and climate crisis forward unchecked, but cannot guarantee food, water, education, health or peace for many people.
"The Covid pandemic shows how vulnerable humanity is and how we underestimate the interacting crises and risks. It is time for a philosophy of ecohumanism that is radical in a positive sense2, says Ibisch. We need to ground our thinking: Starting from nature towards humanity. Based on planetary boundaries, people and their strengths must become the focus of the debate about ecology and our future.
Pierre Ibisch discussed the significance and impact this can have for our society, but also at a local level, with Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende, Head of the Environment Department Andreas Kowol and the audience. Journalist Petra Boberg moderated the event, which was broadcast live on the internet.
