Wiesbaden city pigeon project

With its urban pigeon project, the state capital of Wiesbaden is breaking new ground to address the current issues of population regulation and animal welfare.

A pigeon stands on a stone pavement in a pedestrian zone, the background is blurred, other pigeons can be seen, a person with a green top, rucksack and shorts as well as a white house facade.

The project is based on existing models, such as the cities of Augsburg, Düsseldorf and Aachen. With an overall concept for controlling the population of urban pigeons in line with animal welfare standards, the city is attempting to keep the nuisance to citizens and pollution of the city to a minimum while at the same time providing the animals with a species-appropriate life.

Urban pigeons are not wild animals, but domesticated pets. They have been bred by humans over thousands of years and have certain genetic characteristics that can lead to a variety of problems when humans and pigeons live together if the animals are forced to live wild on the streets.

Pigeon lofts can also be found in Wiesbaden.

Pigeon lofts

In order to regulate the pigeon population in Wiesbaden, the animals are cared for in supervised pigeon lofts and their eggs are exchanged for dummies. The pigeons receive species-appropriate grain feed, water and medical care. The pigeons spend most of the day in their loft, where they breed. This significantly reduces the nuisance and pollution of the surrounding area caused by begging, food-seeking and wildly breeding pigeons.

There are currently four managed pigeon lofts in Wiesbaden. The long-term goal is to have pigeon lofts at all points in the city where pigeon groups are concentrated.

Wild breeding grounds

In addition to the pigeon lofts, several wild breeding sites in Wiesbaden, for example in parking garages or backyards, are also looked after and the eggs are exchanged there. Our volunteers from Stadttaubenhilfe Mainz/Wiesbaden e.V. check these places weekly to prevent the animals from reproducing uncontrollably. If possible, breeding sites that cannot be looked after are closed off in an animal-friendly manner.

If you discover wild pigeon nests with eggs or chicks in your home - for example on the balcony or in the attic - or elsewhere, please contact us. We will offer you support to solve the problem. Nests with eggs or chicks must not simply be removed, not even by a pest controller, as the killing of pigeons is a punishable offense.

You can reach us at stadttaubenprojektwiesbadende or kontaktstadttaubenhilfe-mz-wide or by calling the advice number of Stadttaubenhilfe Mainz/Wiesbaden e.V. on 0163 1783414.

Support and care

In addition to the care of the lofts, the concept presented includes another new cornerstone of the Wiesbaden city pigeon project: the plans for a new hospital and care station for injured city and wild pigeons as well as young animals in need of help.

Do you have any questions? If you have any questions about the project, problems with pigeons or if you would like to support us, please contact the City of Wiesbaden at stadttaubenprojektwiesbadende.

Please do not feed pigeons!

According to paragraph 8 of the city of Wiesbaden's hazard prevention ordinance, the feeding of urban and wild pigeons on public roads and public facilities as well as their facilities in the area of the state capital Wiesbaden is prohibited. Please do not feed the animals any stale bread or leftover food of any kind, as this makes the pigeons ill and attracts rats. Wild feeding lures the pigeons away from the lofts, making it difficult for them to bond with the lofts. In addition, large feeding flocks can form, which can be a major nuisance for residents and passers-by.

Have you found an injured pigeon (urban or wild) or a helpless young animal?

Important: If possible, secure the animal in a cardboard box, jute bag, cloth or similar - but not in a plastic bag. Do not give food or water! Keep unfeathered or hypothermic animals warm - for example with a lukewarm warming or PET bottle. If you are unable to transport the animal to an avian veterinarian yourself (for example to the Walluf Small Animal Center) or if you are unsure whether it is an emergency, please call the pigeon emergency number of the Stadttaubenhilfe Mainz/Wiesbaden e.V.: 01631 783414.
